Orsini, Felice

(1819-1858)
   Italian revolutionary
Born in Meldola, near Forli, italy, Felice orsini was affiliated with the nationalist Young italy movement and took part in the liberal insurrection of 1843. Condemned (1844), he was amnestied by Pope Pius IX (1846). One of the main agents of the italian nationalist Giuseppe Mazzini, he served in the government of the Roman Republic (1849) and fought alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi in the struggle against the invading French forces (see general Nicolas-Charles oudinot). Condemned in 1855 for his role in several attempted uprisings, he escaped to England, where, with others, he planned the assassination of napoléon III. The attempt (January 14, 1858) failed, but it resulted in numerous other victims. Orsini, defended by jules favre, was sentenced to death and executed. His attempt, on the life of Napoléon III contributed to the reinforcing of repression in France and led to Napoléon Ill's support for the movement for Italian unification.
